Adventures in an Allergy Friendly Kitchen

If only babies came with manuals.

If you are trying to determine (or have already determined) that your baby is allergic to milk and soy, then I had you in mind when I started this page. (Soy allergies often go hand in hand with dairy allergies due to the protien similarities.)

Elimination diets are so hard. It is my hope that this site makes this experience easier for you.

There is a certain relief that comes with answers from an allergist.  A reason why your baby has been covered in hives for 18 months...why your baby is incredibly tiny, why your baby was smaller at 9 months then at 6 months... Then, sheer panic hits. HOW am I supposed to feed my baby? Soy is in EVERYTHING, and for many people dairy is a part of almost every meal. (In one form or another).

If you are eliminating dairy and soy from your diet in order to continue nursing your baby- the task of eliminating milk and soy from your own diet can be even more overwhelming- I know.

Hi!

I'm a mother to three precious gifts.

I was thrown into the world of food allergies when our daughter- "Munchkin 2" was diagnosed with her milk and soy allergies when she was 18 months old. I had to learn a milk and soy free diet hard and fast.

It was like baptisim by fire.

Three years later, we determined that our baby- "Munchkin 3" was also allergic to milk and soy- but this time, when he was 2 months old. I am grateful that we figured it out much earlier, and I am eternally grateful that I already had a firm knowledge of what I could eat to continue to nurse him.  I knew what I was doing, and I still found adjusting my diet overwhelming.  I can't even begin to imagine how overwhelmed I would have felt if I had to figure out how to eat a milk and soy free diet while we were still in the fourth trimester.

How it all
        began.

Imagine not knowing how to cook.  At all. Add a complicated fear of food, and you would be at my base level of cooking, not that long ago; before our initial allergy adventure began.

If it wasn't a breakfast food, dessert, or pasta, I was at a loss on what was involved in cooking.  It turns out that a large part of the job description of Mother, is feeding your children.  ALL. DAY. LONG. Sometimes, all they do is eat!  Nursing my children was the easiest part of feeding them, and that's saying something.

This is my Adventure; Learning how to make creative, fun food for my munchkins, with an all dairy, soy, and shellfish allergy.

I hope all of my failures, successes, and experiences help you feed your family and yourself while you embark on this journey.
